What to Expect When Your Roof Is Replaced

September 24, 2026 RC Roofing and Siding LLC

A roof replacement is loud, fast and, for most homeowners, something they go through once or twice in a lifetime. Knowing what's coming makes it far less stressful. This is how a replacement goes from start to finish.

It starts with an inspection and a written estimate. We measure the roof, look at the shingles, flashing and vents, and check from the attic where we can. The estimate should spell out what's being removed, what's going on, and how damaged decking is handled if any is found.

Before the crew arrives, a little preparation helps. Move cars out of the driveway and garage, bring in patio furniture and grills, and take down anything fragile hanging on walls — hammering on the roof travels through the house. Let your neighbors know, and plan for pets and small children to be somewhere quieter for the day.

Day one begins with the tear-off: the old shingles and underlayment come off down to the wood deck. This is the moment of truth for the deck — any soft or rotted sheets are cut out and replaced, because new shingles are only as good as what they're nailed to.

Then the roof is built back up in layers. Drip edge at the eaves, underlayment across the whole deck, flashing at chimneys, walls and valleys, then the shingles themselves, working up from the bottom edge to the ridge. Vents and the ridge cap go on last.

Cleanup is part of the job, not an afterthought. Old material is loaded and hauled away, the yard, beds and driveway are cleared, and the ground is swept for nails. Most single-family roofs are done in a day or two; size, pitch and weather can stretch that.

Before we call it finished, walk the property with us and look at the roof from the ground. Ask anything you want. RC Roofing and Siding LLC replaces roofs across Upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina — call (864) 421-3659 for a free estimate.
